Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) use sensors, controls, and software to extract more capacity and flexibility from the existing transmission system—often at a fraction of the cost of new infrastructure. This session features three utilities sharing real-world deployment experiences and the results they have achieved. Great River Energy (GRE) deployed two types of Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) sensors to deliver lower-cost power and pinpoint the locations of disturbances—enabling faster and even proactive system responses. NV Energy will share their approach to DLR, including its value as a situational awareness tool for increasing grid capacity and better understanding asset risk. VELCO deployed Advanced Power Flow Control to extend the life of a Phase Shifting Transformer and manage increasing wind generation—reducing both generation and infrastructure costs. Through these case studies, attendees will gain a practical understanding of how to evaluate, select, and integrate GETs to improve transmission performance and reliability.
Session Takeaways:
- How GRE and NV Energy evaluated and selected DLR vendors, and the cost savings and reliability benefits each technology delivered
- How Advanced Power Flow Control differs from legacy power flow control solutions and when it is the right fit
- How VELCO is using GETs to manage increasing renewable generation while extending the life of critical transmission assets
- Practical strategies for overcoming common integration challenges and building a GET roadmap for your system
