Description

Today’s utilities need additional access to real-time data to operate their networks safely and efficiently against attackers and new demands. Many utilities are currently evaluating the automation and modernization of their communications systems to support these business drivers. Utilities have a need for secure and reliable communications systems to be able to manage their networks and to continue to be able to provide customer benefits now and into the future. A recent survey conducted by the Utility Broadband Alliance (UBBA) gained feedback on broadband infrastructure strategies, challenges, and needs from mid-level management to the executive level at various utilities. We will share some of the learnings from the survey and discuss the utilities needs for additional “education on broadband options" and how UBBA is supporting the gaps in "communication network expertise” as leading challenges. One of the goals of this session is to raise the awareness within the utility community of the benefits, pain points, and the prioritization of a strategic communications roadmap while addressing the opportunities and challenges. UBBA and our Utilities will share various perspectives on prioritizing a strategic communications roadmap, addressing the various solutions and ecosystem challenges. We will focus on how utilities are: enabling new and future smart grid technologies for both critical and non-critical system operations • supporting customer affordability by investing capital in lieu of O&M-based cellular services • leveraging their network by providing access to other critical infrastructure industries such as water and gas utilities • complimenting Land Mobile Radios (LMR) for mission- critical communications and worker safety • network sharing services for underserved and rural communities offering the potential to unlock new revenue streams.

Session Takeaways:

  • Explain how Dominion’s platform identifies load-serving capacity and supports interconnection planning.
  • Highlight key features such as flexible user input, heatmaps, and rapid scenario modeling.
  • Demonstrate how the tool reduces hosting capacity analysis time from weeks to minutes.
  • Share implementation strategies, regulatory drivers, and lessons learned from deployment.
  • Explore opportunities for future enhancements and broader industry collaboration.
