Description

The US is rapidly falling behind our renewables and climate-change goals as a result of an aging and congested power grid. Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory recently reported that new generating capacity waiting in interconnection queues nationally is expanding at a record pace with more than 1,400 GW waiting for a connection to the grid. 90% of that capacity is for zero-carbon generation assets like solar, wind, and battery storage.

At the same time, the most recent climate agreement including the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will increase deployment of renewables significantly over the next several years. However, according to a widely shared Princeton University study, to meet these climate goals and utilize this renewable energy, the US will need to, in effect, double the size of the grid.

This panel will assemble leaders to share perspectives from the utilities, ISO/RTOs, and technologies to explore solutions on how to update our grid to meet the challenge with policy initiatives, transmission expansion, and Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs).
