Brian Chen is vice president of Project & Field Engineering at Southern California Edison. In this role, Chen leads engineering projects associated with all distribution, substation and transmission replacements, upgrades and expansions. He also oversees SCE’s transmission and distribution capital portfolio management and interconnection processes.
Chen began his journey at SCE in 2010 through Edison International’s MBA Rotational Intern Program, focusing on finance. In 2011, he joined SCE’s Strategic Planning team. Throughout his career, Chen has held various leadership positions within Transmission & Distribution, Operational Excellence and System Planning & Engineering and has extensive experience in regulatory, business planning, engineering, wildfire mitigation, performance management and continuous improvement.
In his prior role as director of Asset Management & Engineering, he oversaw the development of new grid technologies and solutions. He also developed strategies to optimize the life cycle of SCE’s grid assets, including installation, inspection, maintenance and retirement.
Before joining SCE, Chen was a partner at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, a leading investigative engineering consulting firm. He also served as an adjunct professor for Bucknell University and Southern Methodist University.
Chen earned a bachelor’s in engineering from Purdue University. He also holds a master’s and a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s in business from UCLA.
