The devastating hurricanes, deep freezes and other natural disasters in 2021 serve as a graphic reminder that the electric grid and infrastructure are fragile. Microgrids are one solution to deal with this fragility, as they can help to keep the lights on or shorten recovery time during a major grid outage.

Based on direct experience in California, Puerto Rico, Kentucky and Maryland, the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) has developed a microgrid design framework for utilities, government agencies and developers to use as they engage in intelligent, early-stage conversations with customers and other industry stakeholders. This framework can be used to facilitate discussions among stakeholders to determine the feasibility of a microgrid project. By gathering necessary information upfront, the framework complements modeling and other software tools, so that a microgrid project can be approached more holistically.
