Description

Distribution supervisory control and data acquisition (DSCADA) is a fundamental component to decrease customer interruption duration with intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) and reliable communication. Like many utilities, PSE&G has invested in more than 11,000 IEDs to protect and automate its grid, and the technology enabled it to work safely through a global pandemic.

This session will look at how the utility is leveraging DSCADA to improve communication to the IEDs and provide real-time data collection using 4G technology. The utility’s strategy included retrofitting approximately 2600 existing reclosers with enhanced communications and adding approximately 1800 reclosers on the DSCADA system, improving reliability for over 2.2 million customers by increasing the sectionalization of electric circuits.

From a cybersecurity perspective, hear how PSE&G is adding additional layers of security by migrating existing IEDs into a single substation encrypted and dedicated network.

Session Takeaways:

  • Key initiatives related to cybersecurity and electric reliability
  • Best practices and lessons learned on how DSCADA supported PSE&G initiatives
  • How the enhanced DSCADA system supported PSE&G in major storms during the pandemic
